Target gift card promos: do coupons count toward the spend?
Short answer: coupons lower your qualifying spend. On Target's "spend $X, get a $Y Target GiftCard" promos, the threshold is checked against your price after coupons. If a $5 coupon takes a $100 cart down to $95, you don't qualify for a "spend $100" gift card. This has been confirmed by Target leadership, and it's the single most common way people miss these promos.
How Target's gift card promos are set up
Target runs two kinds of gift card promos:
- Spend-based: "$20 Target GiftCard when you spend $100 or more on select diapers & wipes"
- Item-based: "$10 Target GiftCard when you buy 1 [specific item]"
Target's promotion terms explain the accounting. You're charged for the qualifying item reduced by a Target discount equal to the gift card amount, plus a separate charge for the gift card itself. In other words, the "free" gift card is really a discount on your items, paid back to you as store credit.
That detail explains how coupons, the 5% and returns all behave.
Do coupons count toward the spend?
Coupons reduce the amount that counts. The threshold is measured after manufacturer coupons and Target offers come off. (rule)
How to handle it:
- Total your qualifying items after coupons, not at shelf price.
- Add a small cushion above the threshold if you're close, such as one more qualifying item.
- Check that each item is actually "select." Only items listed in the promo count toward it.
- Watch the receipt for the promo line. If it's missing, fix it before you leave the register.
Coupons are still usually worth using. The math just has to work after they come off.
Example
Say there's a "$20 GiftCard when you spend $100 on select diapers & wipes" promo, and you have $8 in manufacturer coupons.
- Cart at shelf price: $104 → after $8 coupons: $96. Doesn't qualify.
- Add one more $6 qualifying pack: $110 → after coupons: $102. Qualifies for the $20 GiftCard.

How the Circle Card 5% interacts
Both apply, but in a specific order. Target's Circle Card rules say the 5% applies to eligible purchases minus any other discounts and the value of any promotional Target gift cards received.
So on a $30 item with a $10 gift card promo, the 5% is calculated on $20, not $30. (rule)
Separately, the 5% never applies when you're buying gift cards. That covers Target GiftCards, Visa/Mastercard/Amex prepaid cards, and third-party brand gift cards. Target leadership confirms the third-party ones too. (rule)
Gift card promos and price match don't mix
Target won't price match an item if you got a promotional Target GiftCard with the purchase, or if the item currently has a gift card promotion. Pick one: the promo or the match. (rule)
Returns: you keep the gift card, but the refund shrinks
Target's terms say promotional GiftCards are non-refundable. If you return a qualifying item, you keep the gift card, but your refund is reduced by its value. For mail returns, you're refunded the item price minus the Target discount. (rule)
Practical tip: don't pad a cart with something you plan to return just to cross the threshold. The return claws back the gift card's value.
Online and pickup orders
- Ship-to-home: the gift card ships separately.
- Order pickup: the gift card is sent after you pick up the qualifying item.
- Items sold and shipped by Target Plus partners are excluded.
- Promos can't be applied to previous orders.
- Unless stated, offers end at 11:59 PM PT on the expiration date.
Where to find current gift card promos
Target lists them on its Current promotions page and in the weekly ad. As of mid-October 2026, that page lists offers such as a $20 Target GiftCard when you spend $100 or more on select diapers, training pants and wipes, plus single-item promos on certain electronics and household products. Promos change weekly, so check the page before you shop.
A smart gift card promo checklist
- Read the exact promo wording. "Select" items only, and note any per-account limit.
- Stack the item-level discounts first. One manufacturer coupon per item, plus any applicable Target offers, still apply.
- Recalculate after coupons and confirm you're over the threshold.
- Pay with a Circle Card for 5% on the amount left after discounts and the promo gift card value.
- Check the receipt for the gift card line before you leave.
- Use the gift card on your next trip to stretch the savings.
Quick FAQ
Do coupons count toward "spend $X, get a gift card"? They lower the spend that counts. Make sure you're over the threshold after coupons.
Can I use the promo gift card on the same purchase? Many promo terms say the gift card isn't valid as payment on the qualifying purchase. Check the specific offer.
Does the 5% apply to the gift card's value? No. The 5% is calculated after subtracting the promo gift card's value.
