How Target Circle Bonus works and what stacks with it

Updated October 2026 · Checked against Target's published policies

A Target Circle Bonus is a personalized offer that you have to activate yourself. It might give you extra savings, a promotional item, or Target Circle Rewards for hitting a goal. Bonuses work differently from regular Circle deals, and those differences decide what you can stack with them. Everything below comes from Target's published Circle terms and has been confirmed by Target leadership.

Circle deals vs. Circle Bonuses

Target uses two names that sound almost the same:

  • Target Circle deals (formerly "Circle offers") mostly apply automatically at checkout once you identify as a member, in store or online. You used to have to tap to add them. Now most of them just apply.
  • Target Circle Bonuses are curated just for you. They show up in the Target Circle Bonus section of your account, and Target's terms say they won't be applied at checkout unless you choose to apply them to a specific transaction.

Some Bonuses take money off. Others are "earn" Bonuses: make the qualifying purchases or actions listed in the Bonus, identify as a Circle member, and you get the stated Target Circle Rewards.

How to use a Circle Bonus

  1. Find it. Open the Target app or Target.com, go to Target Circle, and look in the Bonus area or under Deals → Saved.
  2. Activate it. Only a Bonus that's on your Target Circle Deals page and valid at the time of purchase can be redeemed.
  3. Identify yourself at checkout. In store, use the Wallet barcode in the Target app, a printout of your barcode, or the phone number on your Circle account. Target says photographs of barcodes aren't accepted. Online, be signed in before you place the order.
  4. Watch the expiration. Bonuses expire at 11:59 PM Pacific on the stated date unless noted. If you printed your barcode and the Bonus expires or is canceled before you use it, it won't work.

What stacks with a Circle Bonus

Target's Circle terms say storewide Target Circle Deals or Target Circle Bonuses can be applied together with item-level and category-level Circle offers. Combined with the coupon policy, the per-item stack looks like this:

  • One manufacturer coupon (paper or digital) per item
  • One Target category-level offer per item
  • One Target item-level offer per item
  • A storewide deal or a Circle Bonus alongside those item and category offers
  • Then the Circle Card 5% on the eligible amount left after the other discounts

See the 1 + 1 + 1 rule and Circle Card 5% on top.

One limit to remember: Target's coupon policy allows only one storewide offer per guest per transaction. If you're using more than one category or storewide offer, you have to meet each offer's purchase requirement separately. (rule)

What does NOT stack with a Circle Bonus

  • Price match. Target says Circle Bonuses can't be applied with a price match. Automatic Circle deals can be price matched. Tap-to-add Bonuses can't. (rule)
  • Previous purchases. Bonuses can't be applied after the fact. If you forgot to activate one, it won't be added to a past receipt. (rule)
  • More than the item's value. A Bonus's value can't exceed the value of the item purchased, and Bonuses have no cash value.
  • CVS items. Target coupons and Circle offers can't be used on products sold by CVS inside Target. (rule)

Limits and fine print worth knowing

  • Per-transaction and per-member caps. Each Bonus can limit the number of items per transaction and the number of uses per member. Check the Bonus details before you load up a cart.
  • In store vs. online. Each Bonus states whether it's valid in store, online, or both.
  • Percentage Bonuses vary. For percent-off Bonuses, actual savings can differ by store because item prices differ.
  • Target can cancel them. Target reserves the right to remove or cancel Bonuses at any time.
  • Expired ones disappear. If a Bonus is gone from your saved list, it has most likely expired. Target removes expired ones automatically.

Returns and earned Rewards

If you return items that earned Circle Rewards through a Bonus, Target may take back those Rewards. If you've already spent them, your Rewards balance can go negative. Keep that in mind before you buy extra just to hit a spend goal you might later undo. (rule)

Also, the old 1% Circle earnings on every purchase is gone. Older stacking guides that count it are outdated. (rule)

A simple Bonus-day checklist

  1. Open the app and activate the Bonus before you shop.
  2. Clip any manufacturer coupon for the same items (one per item).
  3. Check whether an automatic Circle deal already applies to those items. It can stack.
  4. Pay with a Circle Card for 5% off what's left, if you have one.
  5. Skip price match on this trip. It won't combine with the Bonus.
  6. Plug the numbers into our cart stack calculator to see your real price.
