Guide · Confirmed by Target leadership
Can you use coupons on Target clearance?
Yes, with manufacturer coupons. Target registers accept manufacturer coupons on clearance-priced items, as confirmed by Target leadership. Target Circle deals are a different story: Target's coupon policy says clearance is excluded from Circle deals unless the deal says otherwise. Here's the full picture so you know what to expect at checkout.
The clearance stacking rules at a glance
- Manufacturer coupon on clearance: yes. One per item, paper or digital. (rule)
- Target Circle deal on clearance: usually no. Excluded unless the deal's own terms say otherwise. (rule)
- Circle Card 5% on clearance: yes on eligible items. It applies to eligible purchases after other discounts. (rule)
- Price match on clearance: no. Clearance, closeout and liquidation pricing are on Target's price match exclusion list.
Manufacturer coupons on clearance: how it works
Manufacturer coupons are paid for by the brand, not Target, so a clearance sticker doesn't block them. The register scans the coupon against Target's master file of valid coupons and applies it if the item matches.
Target's coupon policy has a few rules that matter more on clearance than anywhere else:
- No overage. A coupon's value is applied only up to the reduced price of the item. Target won't give cash back or move the extra value to other items. If a 70%-off item rings up at $1.49 and your coupon is $2 off, you save $1.49, not $2.
- Exact match required. The item must match the coupon's description: brand, size, quantity, color, flavor and so on. Accepting unmatched coupons is against policy.
- One manufacturer coupon per item. You can't use two on one item, and you can't combine a Circle digital manufacturer coupon with a paper one on the same item. (rule, DMC rule)
- Limit of 4 identical coupons per household, per day, unless the coupon says otherwise.
- Paper coupons are for in-store purchases. And Target doesn't accept manufacturer coupons shown on a phone, except Target Circle manufacturer coupons.
- Tax uses the pre-coupon price. Target calculates sales tax on the item's full value before a manufacturer coupon. Target's own coupons do reduce the taxable amount, unless the law says otherwise.
Why Circle deals usually don't work on clearance
Target Circle deals are Target's own discounts, and Target's coupon policy says plainly that "Clearance is excluded from Target Circle deals unless otherwise noted." If a Circle deal doesn't specifically say it includes clearance, assume it won't apply to a clearance-priced item.
Before you build a cart around a Circle deal, read the deal's terms in the app. A few deals do explicitly include clearance, and those are worth noticing.
A realistic clearance stack
Here's how a good clearance trip usually works:
- Find the clearance item and check the sticker. Prices can differ by store, and in-store clearance pricing isn't visible online.
- Scan it in the Target app to check for a digital manufacturer coupon.
- Bring one manufacturer coupon that exactly matches the item.
- Pay with a Circle Card for 5% off the remaining eligible amount.
Example: a clearance item marked down to $6.00, a $2.00 manufacturer coupon, and the Circle Card 5% → $6.00 − $2.00 = $4.00, then 5% off = $3.80 before tax. (Illustrative numbers. Try your own in the calculator.)
Things that commonly go wrong
- The coupon "beeps." Usually the item doesn't exactly match the coupon (wrong size or variety), or the coupon isn't in Target's master file. Target won't override an invalid coupon.
- The coupon is worth more than the item. You only get up to the item's price. No overage.
- Expecting a Circle deal to apply. It usually won't on clearance. Check the deal's wording.
- Trying to price match clearance. Not allowed, even to another Target price.
- Online vs. in store. Online clearance prices are separate from in-store clearance pricing, and in-store clearance can only be bought in store.
Returns on coupon purchases
When you return an item, Target's refund doesn't include any promotional discount or coupon that applied to the original order. Target also reserves the right to decline returns of items bought with manufacturer coupons or rebates. If you're buying clearance with coupons, buy what you'll actually keep.
Courtesy goes a long way
Target reserves the right to refuse or limit coupon use, including when a guest's repeated behavior becomes disruptive. Bring coupons that clearly match the item, have them ready at checkout, and be patient if a team member needs to check one. That makes for smoother trips, especially during big clearance events.
